Mercedes-Benz officially announced its upcoming S 400 BlueHybrid during the Spanish event, perhaps as a response to the Lexus LS 600L h. The new model will feature the company’s 279-hp direct injection 3.5-litre V6 connected to a compact 20-hp module.

The disc-shaped electric motor also functions as the starter and alternator. Its improved fuel economy with its start/stop functionality, while also recuperating energy from the regenerative brakes, as you would expect.

The kicker comes in the form of the battery itself: Mercedes-Benz has adopted lithium-ion technology for the S 400 BlueHybrid, and the unit itself takes up the exact same amount in non-hybrid models. This means no loss of trunk space or missing fold-down rear seats as in most other ‘mild’ hybrids.

Mercedes claims the S 400 BlueHybrid will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and return 7.9L/100 km in the combined cycle.
