The ML 450 BlueHYBRID is the first example of Mercedes’ partnership with BMW, Chrysler and General Motors in dual-mode hybrid vehicles. We’ve already seen this technology in the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade triplets and the Aspen/Durango twins attached to those companies’ corporate V8s, but MB decided to travel a path of reduced displacement, in this case a 279 hp 3.5-litre V6.

The ML450 BlueHYBRID’s system itself is almost exclusively package in the transmission case. There are two electric motors that combine to provide 163 hp, and the proprietary transmission mimics the action of a CVT.

Combined output is 340 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque, and acceleration from 0-100 km/h is dispatched in 8.2 seconds. Fuel economy is rated at a combined 7.7 L/100 km, which is better than even the current 320 CDI’s rating of 11.3/8.3 city/highway.
